Dining Tables - Korean Traditional Handicrafts
In English
Ancient korean Dining Tables, called soban, literally "small tables", were diverse in form and kind. Various construction materials and techniques reflected popular regional tastes , and decorative patterns symbolized the common wishes for happiness expressed in typical korean folk art style.
Low, portable tables were among the daily household articles designed for traditional korean houses in which families normally sat on floors .
Even today , when most koreans use larger, western-style dining tables and prefer luxurious mother-of-pearl ornaments, the traditional soban of simple and unpretentious beauty is endeared as "craft works with artistic quality ", perfected through the warm touch of women over the centuries.
